The color of a male house finch comes from pigments it gets in its food during molting, the color can range from deep red to golden yellow. In 1940 a group of house finches were turned loose on long island, new york ,they have since spread quickly across the eastern united states. In Hawaii the House Finch is known as the “papaya bird” because of its preference for the fruit. Often mistaken for the Purple Finch, however not quite as richly colored. House finches will also nest on open platforms as well as bird houses Sunflower seeds are a favorite food of house finches
